Workforce Challenge

Jose Luis was a former foster child and troubled youth that came into the youth program in 2008 as a high school dropout. He did not dress appropriately for a work environment and had a 'street mentality'. Since coming into the youth program, however, One Stop Staff and IVROP have worked together to shape Jose Luis's life for the best.

Workforce Solution

Jose Luis was enrolled in Project Toy, where he received counseling and guidance designed to empower and motivate him through leadership activities and community service. The program provided him with work experience, pre-employability and customer service training. Project Toy also provided Jose Luis with tutoring hours and support to increase his Adult Basic Education scores and obtain his GED. Additionally, Jose Luis received funds through an individual training account to study HVAC/Air Conditioning, where he gained extra skills to make him more marketable for employment. More than just skills and trainings, Brawley One Stop and Project TOY became an extended family which always provided him with support and never gave up on him.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jose Luis has accomplished all of the program's goals, including completing his GED and finding a job, but most importantly he has grown personally. Within three years, Jose Luis matured and became a responsible young man. He changed the way he dressed, stopped getting in trouble with the law and changed friendships. Jose Luis began paying off his court bills and even started wearing prescription eye glasses, which he had previously rejected since he thought they made him look nerdy and not cool.

Jose Luis continues looking for new opportunities now that he has his GED. He is looking into joining California Conservation Corps for a new experience or continuing a higher education at Imperial Valley College. As of now, Jose Luis continues working and providing excellent customer service at Vons in Brawley. He moved out from his grandmother’s house, is living on his own and was also able to purchase a car with his hard-earned money. Thanks to the supportive Brawley One Stop family and the services provided by IVROP, Jose Luis is now a productive member of society and of today's workforce.
