Workforce Challenge

Mike was laid off from his job in the building/construction supply industry in late 2008 and came to DavidsonWorks in early 2009 seeking assistance with short term training to become employable in a more stable area.

Workforce Solution

After careful consideration, Mike and his Career Development Consultant decided that the Networking Systems Associate Degree program was the best fit for him even though it was a longer program. And though he was at first hesitant about going back to school because he had been out of school for “so long,” Mike excelled.

The case manager working with Mike encouraged him to get involved with the college while attending classes. Mike took this advice to heart, and while enrolled as a student was: nominated and chosen to be a DCCC Ambassador, later becoming President of the Ambassador’s association; selected as a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Lambda (Honor societies); and selected to be an advisor for the Ambassadors.

Mike was called upon to set up tours for prospective students, worked in the financial aid department, was selected for the Rising Star award and was nominated for most outstanding SGA officer of the year.

Outcomes & Benefits

Mike obtained a Silver Career Readiness Certificate and in May 2011, graduated with his AAS in Networking Technology with a 4.0 GPA. In February 2011, he obtained a part time position at the new Campus Information Desk and continues to work at DCCC in that position.
