Workforce Challenge

Kerri had attended Lexington Sr. High, where she completed the 9th grade prior to leaving school. In April 2009, she came to DavidsonWorks and entered the Get REAL program to try finish her basic education.

Workforce Solution

Kerri took the entry assessment for the program and was placed in Adult Education Classes. She came to school every day and worked very hard in the classroom. Upon taking the assessment a second time, she qualified for the Alternative High School/GED. She needed sixteen credits to complete the program and obtain her diploma.

Because Kerri also needed to work, she and her counselor at DavidsonWorks talked about placement in a work experience. She liked the idea and in June 2009 Kerri started working at Davidson County Community College in the campus Daycare.

Kerri continued to work hard in the classroom and at work. After about a year of attending Get REAL Kerri was ready to take the Pre-GED test to see how she would score. Kerri did a very good job and decided to take the final GED test.

In April 2010 Kerri started the process of the taking the final GED test. She completed the test on April 29th. In the meantime Kerri’s work experience was about to end. Her supervisor at the Daycare was able to hire Kerri part time once she completed her work experience. This was a wonderful opportunity for Kerri.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kerri made a perfect score on the math part of the GED test and graduated with Honors. Kerri also was involved in the Youth Leadership Program of Davidson County and participated in the Customer Service continuing education class at Get REAL.

Sponsored by DavidsonWorks, Kerri enrolled at Davidson County Community College in the fall of 2010 and is now majoring in Early Childhood Education.
