Workforce Challenge

David Waugh came to DavidsonWorks after his established construction job of 10 years fell victim to the economic crisis in late 2009. Though it was out of his comfort zone, he decided further training was needed to find sustainable employment.

Workforce Solution

In January 2010, David enrolled with DavidsonWorks and began training as part of the Governor’s JobsNOW 12:6 initiative/ Welding pathway. Through JobsNOW, David also participated in a Human Resource Development class that prepared him to take the WorkKeys exam. His hard work paid off and in July 2010, David earned his JobsNOW welding completion certificate and a gold level NC Career Readiness Certificate.

As a top student, David was recommended for a work experience position through the TriadWorks Transitional Employment Program in July and August 2010. This opportunity allowed David to gain over two months of valuable "hands on" experience while continuing his job search.

Outcomes & Benefits

David was referred to a welding position with Wolverine Proctor, a respected welding production company in Lexington, NC. David had an excellent interview and was offered a full time position in September 2010.
In the spring of 2011, he successfully completed the exam to become a certified welder in stainless steel metal. Also, David has increased his responsibilities with the company, receiving a promotion to Crew Leader. David is committed to producing high quality products and excellent customer service.

In a little over a year after being laid off from his position in the construction industry, David has begun a new career in the welding field. David's journey has been difficult but rewarding, his story is an exemplary example of how the WIA program can help hard-working, and determined individuals achieve their educational and employment goals.
