Workforce Challenge

Since being enrolled into WIA in 09/2010, single mother Ninna has worked extremely hard and reached two important academic goals. In January 2011, Ninna successfully completed her high school diploma a semester early, and began the Nursing Assistant (NA) course right away. In fact, there were two weeks when Ninna was working on both her high school and NA curriculum. In April 2011, she completed her Nursing Assistant I course at the community college and received her state certification.

Workforce Solution

Ninna worked with her Career Development Consultant at DavidsonWorks to define these academic goals. In addition to pursuing her diploma and certification, Ninna also spent time pursuing leadership opportunities. As a teen mother, Ninna wanted to give back so she used her parenting experience and volunteered as a Teen Parent Program volunteer through her high school. As a Teen Parent volunteer, Ninna was a spokesperson and talked to other students, individually and in group settings, about the difficulties and struggles involved in being a teen parent. In addition to the Teen Parent Program volunteer work, Ninna used her Nursing Assistant training to volunteer at a local diabetes walk where she took blood pressure for walk participants.

Outcomes & Benefits

Currently, Ninna is working full time as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She passed her state certification exam in April and began working full time at Pine Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in May. Ninna has never had any type of job in her entire life and was so motivated to begin working that she applied for this job the same afternoon that she passed her state exam. Ninna plans to work full time as a CNA for at least a year and then begin the coursework required to get accepted into the RN program. Her long term goal is to be a neonatal nurse.
