Workforce Challenge

National Tube Supply Company is a metals service center, specializing in DOM and hot finished seamless (HFS) tubular products. The company cuts steel pipes to specific lengths for its customers. The primary industries that they service include oil, mining, marine, housing, and automotive. National Tube Supply Company is based in University Park, IL with 90 employees. Traditionally, the company’s method of training was for senior employees to train new hires, but training was inconsistent.

Workforce Solution

In assessing operations, the company determined that mistakes were being made cutting the correct size and length of pipes, resulting in unnecessary waste. National Tube Supply was successful in obtaining incumbent worker training funds to offset the training costs for 60 employees. The training was delivered through the Joliet Junior College and addressed the following: Use of micrometers and digital calipers used to measure the wall thickness of tubing; use of a tape measure for measuring length of tubing, and choosing the appropriate tool for measuring materials.

Outcomes & Benefits

“This program was beneficial for both employers and employees. We were able to enhance the skills of far more employees than we could have otherwise trained. Eliminating employee errors through this training is a cost savings to the company,” said Kim Sventin, Human Resource Manager at National Tube Supply Company.
