Workforce Challenge

SATO Labeling’s Romeoville facility employs over 75 full-time employees and is a three-shift manufacturer of tags and labels primarily for the retail industry. Several job functions within the manufacturing processes needed training, and the expertise level of the employees varied from beginning to experienced workers. The company needed a cost-effective solution to meet these needs.

Workforce Solution

Through the Workforce Investment Board of Will County, SATO accessed Incumbent Worker funding to cover the costs of several training needs.

SATO first concentrated on training for its less-seasoned manufacturing employees in the art of flexographic printing, providing refresher courses to more senior employees and educating all on new advances in the industry.

Then, training in 5S (a manufacturing methodology) and Lean Manufacturing (a process improvement methodology) for management staff resulted in the development of four teams of employees that are working on workplace organization and elimination of non-value added activities in the manufacturing process.

Lastly, process improvement and new technologies training for flexographic printing press operators was equally appreciated by employees and SATO.

Outcomes & Benefits

The 5S and Lean Manufacturing management teams have been successful in improving housekeeping and eliminating wasted motion due to better workstation layout. The process improvement training was met with very positive feedback from the operators
