Workforce Challenge

Hawkeye Energy Solutions, a division of United Engineering, helps customers improve their bottom lines by helping them save energy through energy monitoring, lighting retrofits and improving major building systems. The company wanted to expand its service offerings, but this would require specialized training to develop new skills among their engineers/certified energy managers, and budget for the training was not available.

Workforce Solution

Through an incumbent worker grant program from the Association of Energy Engineers, the training was provided to the existing staff. As a result, the company was able to obtain AutoCAD MEP, energy auditing training, and electrical systems design training for two staff members. Hawkeye Energy Solutions is now able to offer a new service to its customers called Building Information Modeling (BIM). AutoCAD MEP is design software that is used to complete a BIM-style project. With BIM, Hawkeye Energy Solutions creates a 3D view which provides a better understanding of complex geometries. This allows them to uncover potential conflicts between a building’s structure and its mechanical systems before building construction or renovations actually take place.

Outcomes & Benefits

"Small business is the heartbeat of America. The grant program allowed us to access training that would have otherwise been unaffordable. We developed a new skill set and expanded our services,” said Gary Powers, President of Hawkeye Energy Solutions.
