Workforce Challenge

Delores Valenzuela was caught in the economic downturn in Coalinga, CA. After 20 years experience in medical administration, she found herself looking for another position. Delores relocated to Merced, CA, thinking the larger city would have more job opportunities. She soon realized that the positions she was applying for were being sought by many other applicants who had more education and experience than herself. Two years of unemployment left Dolores frustrated and stressed.

Workforce Solution

Dolores had enrolled with Worknet in Coalinga just after losing her job and then had transferred to the Merced Worknet office after her relocation.

Delores began to use the resources offered by Worknet, such as the PLATO lab to upgrade her achievement scores in English, reading and math. She also searched for jobs on the internet, updated her resume, kept an eye on the Job Wall, met with a counselor, and began attending medical courses to bring her skills up to date.

"It is the knowledge that is going to get you in the door,” said Delores. Worknet helped Delores with interview techniques, and she successfully increased her scores in math, English and reading.

Outcomes & Benefits

Dolores attended various workshops and courses for medical terminology and anatomy and she continued using the resources at Worknet. She felt empowered by the training and found a position with Merced Medical Center as an ER Registrar. The position was for 40 plus hours a week with a good salary and benefits. Dolores plans to continue her education and hopes to grow with the Hospital. She definitely thanks the Merced County Worknet staff and resources in obtaining her position.
