Workforce Challenge

Robert, an HR Manager with 15 years of experience, lost his job in January 2011, when his company's manufacturing plant closed. Robert came to the McHenry County Workforce Network for assistance in finding new employment. As an older worker, he was concerned about being over-qualified for the positions that were available in his area, but he was willing to do what it took to find a new job.

Workforce Solution

Through the Workforce Network, Robert attended job club sessions and learned about other services. In early February, he responded to a local ad and was offered an interview for a full time office position at Black Diamond Plumbing and Mechanical. He had no personal connection or referral to the job opening, and so he paid careful attention to the content and tone of his cover letter.

Outcomes & Benefits

The interviewer was impressed with Robert's cover letter, as well as his professional appearance and the concise and prepared manner in which he answered the interview questions. Robert was offered the job and is not employed full time by the company.

"I would like to thank all of the folks at the McHenry County Workforce Center who give unemployed workers the encouragement, information, knowledge, and skills to move forward with our lives and find suitable re-employment opportunities," shared Robert. "Your efforts and your organization are greatly appreciated!"
