Meet Maria

Workforce Challenge

Maria is a single parent who was raising her grandchild in addition to her two other children. In the past, it had been difficult for her to find stable jobs that she could coordinate around her child care needs and schedule. She came to the Metro South/West Career Center for assistance.

Workforce Solution

At the Center, Maria qualified as a low-income adult under the Workforce Investment Act, and was eligible to receive a training voucher that would help her gain skills for a more stable career. The career center staff assessed her skills and provided assistance in researching the local labor market needs, and Maria enrolled in a Medical Assistant program at American Career Institute in Framingham. She took afternoon classes in addition to the morning classes in order to complete the program quickly. While at ACI, she formed a study group with other students and worked hard. Maria graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and perfect attendance.

Outcomes & Benefits

Upon graduation, Maria interviewed for a job as a medical assistant. The interviewer was so impressed with her that she was offered a job as a team leader in the Newton Wellesley medical complex starting at $17.00 per hour. Maria continues to do well in her new career.
