Workforce Success Story Submitted By:
San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board

Meet Suleyma

Workforce Challenge

San Bernardino County’s youth have been especially vulnerable during the current recession. Two years ago, 19 year old Suleyma and her older sister were left in charge of their younger sister when their parents were deported to Mexico. She had problems finding employment and found herself in a financial and personal crisis.

Workforce Solution

Suleyma found support and opportunity through the Workforce Investment Act’s Youth Program at Hesperia Unified School District.

Through the program, youth who face challenges building a career can receive training and education, mentoring, assistance with job placement and be placed into job training programs that are paid for with funds administered by the San Bernardino County Workforce Investment Board. While in these programs, youth also receive assistance with a range of practical needs including gas cards, books, tools, bus passes and other support to keep them in training.

Outcomes & Benefits

Through the WIA Youth program, Suleyma gained intensive life skills and work training and developed financial stability as well.

“I made the most of this program by taking every workshop I could while attending community college full-time, training in cosmetology and working as a receptionist,” she stated proudly.

Suleyma’s older sister is currently enrolled in the program and they are both grateful to be financially self-sufficient and pursuing their careers.
