Workforce Challenge

Rinkoo Nat owns three UPS stores in the San Jose area. Finding the right employees is critical to her success. “We are looking for people with a good personality, who are pleasant and have a positive attitude,” she says. In addition to these characteristics, Nat needs employees who can become certified to be notaries and to take fingerprints. She also occasionally has questions about running a small business and needs a sounding board.

Workforce Solution

Nat has found NOVA to be a valuable place to look for workers. She can post her open positions free of charge. She also comes on site to recruit and interview candidates. She’ll come to the CONNECT Job Seeker Center for a day, provide a recruitment presentation, and then meet for very quick interviews of 20 or 30 candidates.

She also calls NOVA’s employer services representative when she has a question about running her business. For example, how does her starting hourly wage compare with that of other businesses in the region? NOVA is able to provide this information based on its access to industry data and statistics as well as direct knowledge.

Outcomes & Benefits

Nat has hired quite a few employees that she found through NOVA, including one who is a notary and has worked for her for more than three years. The on-site, immediate interviews save her a lot of time. If she posts a job elsewhere, she may get 150 resumes. It takes a lot of time to go through them all and set up interviews with the top candidates. “My time is money,” Nat says. At NOVA, she is able to get a sense of the candidates’ customer service skills. And "NOVA staff is very user friendly."
