Workforce Challenge

Renoir Staffing, a 25-year-old niche staffing agency, uses strict hiring criteria when it places workers with property management and real estate companies. These workers have access to confidential information, and they have to know and follow fair housing laws when working for apartment complex managers. Because of this, Renoir needs people who have industry-specific skills – and who can pass a background check. Filling the jobs with the right people is the company’s biggest challenge.

Workforce Solution

Arisha Williams, manager of staffing services, says the right matches are “what has made us very successful.” In 2007, when Williams was overseeing Renoir’s San Jose branch office, she contacted Joyce Nolan, a staffing specialist at NOVA, in hopes of adding to her list of local resources for finding potential employees.

Williams was impressed that Nolan not only “allowed me the opportunity to come and do a presentation, but also designated office space for more in-depth, one-on-one interviews.” Williams would give a presentation and hand out applications, and then interview at NOVA the following week.

“It’s really critical for us to be able to spend a little more screening time,” Williams says. “She [Joyce] was extremely accommodating."

Outcomes & Benefits

Williams has been impressed with the quality of the job seekers who attend the presentations. “After our presentation, everyone seemed to have a load of questions,” she says. “The questions were specific to our industry. It gave me confidence that a lot of these people actually had some knowledge of what we do.” Williams says Renoir finds five to eight workers per month who are qualified to be considered for jobs at customer sites. They're also looking at training those with transferable skills.
