Workforce Challenge

The Sunnyvale branch of Manpower needs a steady stream of possible workers to fill the positions its business customers have open: jobs in telemarketing, reception, customer service, warehouse, assembly, and manufacturing. Some are short term, while others are temp-to-perm or direct hire. Some weeks the office will fill a handful of positions; other weeks it needs dozens of workers.
Manpower casts a wide net to find applicants and is always looking for ways to increase its applicant pool.

Workforce Solution

When Joyce Nolan, a staffing specialist at NOVA, contacted Manpower in 2010 to see if a company representative could do a presentation to job seekers at NOVA’s CONNECT Job Seeker Center, it turned into a valuable opportunity for Manpower to find new applicants.

“I went out there with another Manpower staffing specialist and did a presentation on our services and what positions we had available,” says Joann Flores, a staffing specialist with Manpower’s Sunnyvale branch. Manpower also looked over resumes from NOVA job seekers.

Since then Flores has done more presentations and also emails Nolan when she has a job with hard-to-find requirements.

Outcomes & Benefits

Flores says working with NOVA has helped Manpower to fill positions. Nolan “is always quick and efficient with sending me resumes,” she says, and the presentations have helped her find potential employees as well. “She’s partnering to help us with our recruiting efforts,” Flores says of Nolan.

Flores says she also uses NOVA as a resource to help walk-in applicants who come to Manpower hoping for a job but don’t have a resume. “I always refer them to NOVA” for help with job search basics.
