Meet Jermaine

Workforce Challenge

Jermaine moved to Wisconsin after serving a prison sentence out of state. He was looking for a fresh start in his life, but his criminal background and sporadic work history limited his employment opportunities.

Workforce Solution

Jermaine began visiting the Dane County Job Center in Madison for assistance with job searching and résumé development. After six months of using Center's services, he heard about the Transitional Jobs program — a short-term employment program focused on helping people gain work experience and employer references.

Jermaine was enrolled in the program, and received an opportunity to begin work in a custodial position at the Goodman Community Center in Madison. Although this was a new field for Jermaine, and his experience was minimal, he was excited to begin work and have a chance to learn something new every day.

Outcomes & Benefits

After observing him in his new role, Jermaine’s employers were so impressed with his work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond his basic job duties that he has now been hired to continue working after his six-month Transitional Job program participation ends. Jermaine will continue to work part-time and also plans to go to Madison College for an Associates Degree in Cabinetmaking and Millwork in order to expand his career options in the future.
