Workforce Challenge

Danielle was laid off from her position as a Production Supervisor in desktop publishing after more than 30 years with her company. She had worked her way up but now faced interviewing and job seeking as though she were just entering the workforce. Due to the downturn in the economy and the outsourcing of desktop publishing services by many companies, demand for her existing skills was at a minimum.

Workforce Solution

Danielle came to the McHenry County Workforce Network as part of the TRADE eligible participants in the summer of 2009. She was not yet ready to retire from the workforce, and after attending orientation and workshops, she determined that she would need to acquire a new set of skills to help her regain employment. Taking advantage of the retraining program through the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act, she enrolled that fall in the Medical Assisting program at First Institute in Crystal Lake. By the next fall (2010), she was participating in a work-study externship at Centegra in McHenry, Illinois.

Outcomes & Benefits

At the completion of Danielle’s work-study externship with Centegra, she was offered a part time position as a medical assistant. Since then, she has been able to increase her hours to 39 per week. Naturally, Danielle is starting from the ground level, and it will take some time before she returns to the same salary level that her previous experience afforded her, but she is highly motivated and now enjoys employment in a field where there is room to grow.
