Meet Jerry

Workforce Challenge

When Jerry Ashby came to the Stokes County Resource Center in early 2011, he was frustrated. Laid off in 2010 after having been a construction supervisor for 21 years, Jerry, a gruff but hard-working individual, wanted to pursue a career as a truck driver but couldn’t afford the tuition. To his benefit, however, he was a veteran who had been certified to drive tractor trailers for the US military, and he had a clean driving record.

Workforce Solution

With the Stokes WIA representative, Jerry easily got through testing and documentation hurdles, examined his training options and chose Future Truckers of America in Asheboro. With financial assistance from WIA for tuition and a friendly family loan for other expenses, Jerry began CDL school less than a month after first contacting WIA.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jerry completed CDL training with an 88% average in all coursework. He had two job offers as soon as the class was complete but he still had to attain the license. He told his WIA representative, “When I passed the CDL test, I cried like a baby!” Jerry will not forget the help he got from WIA as he begins his new career, working for a company that will repay his family loans and offer a full benefit package.
