Arkansas Workforce Center - Hampton

Meet Andrew & Alonzo

Workforce Challenge

Andrew and Alonzo are 17-year-old high school students. They have struggled with their studies and both come from a financially unstable home. The young men were referred to the Arkansas Workforce Center in Hampton to participate in the Summer Youth Work Experience program to help them gain employment experience.

Workforce Solution

Through the Workforce Center, Andrew and Alonzo were placed in a job at the Calhoun County Recycling Center. There, they learned the practical steps for recycling cardboard, plastic, and paper, but they also learned the 'soft skills' of being at work on time, following directions at the job site, and being polite to managers and co-workers. For perhaps the first time, they felt the satisfaction of performing a job well. Additionally, both are earning some money that can be used to help their families financially.

Outcomes & Benefits

Since their Work Experience placement, Andrew and Alonzo have expressed interest in post-secondary education, an option they may have never considered prior to participation in the program. Their success during the job at the recycling center has proven to Andrew and Alonzo that they are able to learn new things, a confidence that will help them improve learning in school and go on to graduate. Congratulations, Andrew & Alonzo!
