Workforce Challenge

Stephanie worked for a large commercial printing company in Winston-Salem, NC, but she received a notice of layoff after business declined during the recession. She knew that she needed to change fields in order to be more marketable as an employee. She came to the Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments (NWPCOG) Job Center for assistance.

Workforce Solution

At the Job Center, Stephanie applied for Workforce Investment Act (WIA) assistance to pursue an Associates Degree in Biotechnology, a field she felt would offer better opportunities and a career path for growth. She entered the biotech program at Forsyth Technical Community College.

Outcomes & Benefits

Stephanie excelled in her studies, earning an outstanding GPA of 3.8 across her curriculum. She was very excited to be able to meet President Obama on his recent visit to the campus. Stephanie is front and center with President Obama's hands on her shoulders. She recently graduated and has a bright future ahead of her. Congratulations, Stephanie!
