Workforce Challenge

Rhonda was laid off from a clerical position at a construction manufacturing company in October 2008. She updated her resume and began job searching, but her efforts did not generate any interview requests from potential employers. Rhonda contacted the Surry County WIA program for assistance.

Workforce Solution

Rhonda’s WIA Career Facilitator talked to her about the NC Career Readiness Certification and encouraged her to pursue this credential. They also agreed that she should consider training as an option for re-employment. Rhonda chose to pursue the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Surry Community College. She applied for financial aid and registered for pre-requisite courses. Rhonda was accepted into the nursing program and WIA assisted her with supportive services.

Outcomes & Benefits

Rhonda earned the GOLD Level Career Readiness Certification. She graduated in May 2011 from the Associate Degree Nursing Program and has been offered a full-time job with benefits through Novant Health. Rhonda said, "This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done. You might think you can’t do it, but you can."
