Workforce Challenge

Jesus of Stoughton, WI was laid off from his job at the age of 59. With no formal high school education and little computer experience, he struggled to find jobs for which he was qualified. Months passed as Jesus continued to search for jobs with little success.

Workforce Solution

In July 2010, Jesus noticed a flier promoting free computer access and job search assistance at a new “WorkSmart Access Point” that had opened up in Stoughton’s Joining Forces for Families building. The Access Point serves as an employment information center and satellite site to serve job seekers in their own communities. A WorkSmart volunteer stationed at the Access Point in Stoughton worked with Jesus to set up an e-mail account and a Job Center of Wisconsin account to start his job search online.

Within a matter of days, Jesus was contacted to interview for a custodial position with the Dane County Boys and Girls Club. Jesus was hired immediately and began his new job later that month.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jesus is happy with his new position and grateful for the job search services offered at the WorkSmart Access Point.

“My daughters are so proud of me—for getting the job, but also for never giving up,” Jesus said. “This is a great service that everyone who’s looking for work should use.”
