Wired for Work

Workforce Challenge

Mr. M was laid off from his job at a utility company in September 2009 and had unemployed ever since. He was seeking work as an electrician’s helper and came to the Workforce Connection of Central New Mexico (WCCNM) office for assistance with his job search.

Workforce Solution

At WCCNM, the Business Consultant who specializes in the construction industry conducted outreach with local construction businesses and determined that jobs for electricians’ helpers were currently in low demand but licensed electricians were in great demand. The Center then administered skills assessments to Mr M to determine his aptitude for the more advanced electrican work, and he scored very well. Mr. M was referred to the Association of Builders & Contractors to register for the Electrician’s Apprenticeship Program.

Outcomes & Benefits

As a registered apprentice, Mr. M was hired as an Electrician’s Helper/Apprentice through a WIA On the Job Training contract that connected him with a sponsored Apprenticeship at Corbin’s Electric. The apprenticeship allows for full pay and benefits at the start of employment, and will help him gain skills needed to become an electrician. Mr. M's employer is thrilled with his performance. In fact, the company is so enthusiastic about the WIA OJT program that they are now seeking to sponsor additional apprentices in partnership with WIA.
