Meet Sam*

Workforce Challenge

Sam* was facing many challenges: he had lost his contractor business in the economic downturn, causing him to lose his home to bankruptcy. Sam needed to reinvent himself, so he and his wife relocated to Santa Cruz County to live near relatives while he job searched. Although he had interviews, he received no job offers in the more than eight months he had been searching.

Workforce Solution

Sam's wife had heard about the WorkForce training program through some new friends she met at the Career Center in Capitola, and she encouraged Sam to apply. Sam had just joined a guitar guild that met regularly to discuss the art of building guitars. One of the members had a business building guitars and Sam spoke with him about getting an on the job training at his guitar company. WorkForce Santa Cruz assisted Sam and the guitar company with setting up an OJT contract, and he was ecstatic to be learning and getting paid at the same time.

Outcomes & Benefits

Once Sam completed his on the job training, he went on to become a regular employee in his new field of guitar building. He's reinvented himself and enjoys his new career.
