Workforce Challenge

With 23 years experience in manufacturing Teresa and her husband were both unemployed when she came to the One-Stop at McAlister Square for assistance. After endless attempts to obtain full time employment she had decided to seek training opportunities through the WIA Adult program.

Workforce Solution

In March 2010, Teresa began courses at Greenville Technical College to train as a Physician Health Information Technician (PHIT). She received some advice from her Case Manager (WIA) and from Greenville Technical College. Teresa was advised to volunteer: to "get out there and get noticed." She began volunteering with Village Hospital/Spartanburg Regional Hospital in May, 2010 to gain experience in the hospital environment.

"Treat your volunteer hours as though you are going to work and getting paid," Teresa recommends. "Be on time; be there when you are needed; and give it your best.”

Outcomes & Benefits

In November, 2010 Teresa was “noticed” and was hired part time in the Pharmacy Department, making $10.75 per hour. Then, in April, 2011, Teresa received an offer and accepted a full time position at Spartanburg Regional that includes benefits and overtime compensation. Congratulations, Teresa!
