Workforce Challenge

Lisa lives in Mt. Airy and had recently been laid-off from a job that she had held for twenty-two years. The company is owned by a family member who asked her to come to work not long after graduating high school. She was assured that they would teach her everything that she needed to know to succeed in the business and that she didn't need a college education. It was a strong business and she did learn many skills while working there. Lisa had been in her job so long that she figured she would retire from there; however, as the economy took a turn for the worse, so did the construction industry. Suddenly, at the age of 42, in Spring, 2009, she found herself without a job for the first time since she was 16 years old.

Workforce Solution

Lisa had heard that some people who were unemployed were going back to college and earning degrees with help from the Workforce Investment Act of North Carolina. She visited Surry JobLink asking for information. With the help counseling from her Career Facilitator, Lisa decided that Nursing would be a good fit for her. She began classes in the summer of 2009 to prepare to enter the LPN program at Surry Community College.

Outcomes & Benefits

Lisa completed her LPN training, took the necessary exams, and graduated in December, 2010. Later that month, she went to work at Blue Ridge Medical Group in Mount Airy. “I could never have gotten to this point without the help of WIA. I am currently working and attending classes at SCC in preparation for the bridge program from LPN to RN," shared Lisa. "My gratitude to my Career Facilitator and the WIA program comes from the bottom of my heart and I hope to be able to touch lives as a Nurse in the way that mine has been touched and blessed by this opportunity."
