Workforce Challenge

Patrick is a U.S. Citizen but is originally from Nigeria, Africa. Patrick had an LPN (Licensed Practical Nursing) degree, but was not able to secure a job because he was not a native English speaker and the market for nursing jobs was quite competitive in his area. Patrick came to the Malvern, Arkanas, Workforce Center because he had no funds to get back into school and receive a higher degree as a RN. Patrick felt that in order to obtain a job in the nursing field he needed further training and education.

Workforce Solution

Patrick had to overcome many obstacles and challenges in order to achieve his educational and career goals. Patrick received WIA adult program funding in order to help him go back to nursing school at Ouachita Technical College in Malvern, Arkansas. WIA funding through the Malvern Arkansas Workforce Center helped Patrick with his tuition, books, and gas expenses in order for him to complete OTC's RN program and meet his education goal.

Outcomes & Benefits

In December, 2009, Patrick received his RN degree from Outchita Technical College and was able to obtain not only one, but two high paying jobs in Little Rock, AR. With help from Workforce Investment Act funds, Patrick has been able to successfully overcome and conquer his most difficult challenges, and now has become a successful Registered Nurse.
