Meet Renata

Workforce Challenge

After working for the same company for eight years, Renata, a single mother, was facing unemployment. She had a strong work history, but the fact that she never finished college limited her career options. Despite intense job search efforts she was unable to find employment, and she began to lose confidence. Renata knew she had to further her education, but she could not afford to do so. She turned to Illinois workNet of Northern Cook County to learn about WIA programs.

Workforce Solution

After meeting with a WIA Career Advisor, Renata decided to pursue an Accounting Associate Certificate from Oakton Community College. Her WIA Career Advisor recommended that Renata complete computer and job seeker workshops through the Center, which she did. she has also completed computer and job seeker workshops. Renata also worked with her WIA Career Advisor to update her resume and search for part-time employment to provide some income while she attended school.

Outcomes & Benefits

Currently, Renata is working toward her Accounting Associate Certificate at Oakton Community College, and she has a 3.84 GPA. Renata was successful in finding employment as well. She accepted an accounting position through a referral from her WIA Career Advisor. Renata plans to complete her Bachelor’s Degree and CPA license. She credits her WIA Career Advisor with building her confidence and moving her life forward in a more positive direction.
