Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board

Meet Patty

Workforce Challenge

Patty was laid off from her administrative job at a distributor for consumer packaged goods in August, 2008. A friend told her about the Southeast Los Angeles County Workforce Investment Board located in Cerritos. Patty looked for employment for about 6 months and didn’t find any available positions in her field. She sent out résumés but received no response or interview requests. She needed to find employment with more security and had been contemplating taking an Insurance Coding and Billing course.

Workforce Solution

Patty spoke with her career development specialist Jodie Kresl, who told her about an Insurance Coding and Billing school in Garden Grove. “I am a single person and didn’t have the funds to pay for my schooling. Jodie was able to get me the funding for my training that I needed from Concorde College," said Patty. "I started my schooling in February of 2009 and completed the course in October of 2009 with an A. SELACO WIB also trained me on how to interview and how to do my job search. They tested me to find out where my greatest strengths were. They offered several courses that were very beneficial, which included how to use the LinkedIn website, etc.”

Outcomes & Benefits

“In March 2010 I found employment in the medical field, in-loading electronic claims," shared Patty. "I am truly grateful to SELACO Workforce Investment Board for helping me make a dream of mine come true and for giving me the opportunity to train in a field that I can be truly proud of. I now enjoy and feel more secure in my new profession and I am looking forward to growing in the medical field.”
