Meet Macey

Workforce Challenge

At the time of her enrollment with WIA in April 2009, Macey was employed part-time at Asbury United Methodist Church and was seeking a degree in radiologic imaging sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Macey had attempted to attend classes and work prior to seeking help with WIA; however, her grades suffered and she put her education on hold to help take care of her family. She knew that if WIA could help her with her financial needs, she could reach her educational goals.

Workforce Solution

While Macey was in the WIA program, she received the following services: tuition, books and fees assistance, childcare supportive services, transportation supportive services, and case management services. Macey had a few rough spots along the road during her 16 month degree plan. She traveled daily from Magnolia to Texarkana and often times found herself tired and unable to focus on her homework. She also missed out on a lot of family time, but she had WIA on her side pushing her to succeed in her educational goals.

Outcomes & Benefits

Macey graduated from UAMS in August, 2010, with a 2.95 cumulative GPA. She was very happy to receive her degree in radiologic imaging sciences. Later that same month, Macey began work at Family Medical Associates in Ashdown, Arkansas, where she earns $13.00/hr working as a radiology technician. “I am so happy to be working in a family clinical setting,” she said. Macey is a prime example of how WIA can help a person who is underemployed through training and into employment.
