Meet Denise

Workforce Challenge

Denise, formerly an assistant manager of technology, became unemployed in June, 2010. Although she had a computing degree, she had earned this degree in the early 80's, and had never pursued additional education or certifications. She had applied for multiple jobs but the key barrier to employment was that most required the certifications she lacked: A+ and Microsoft. Her previous employer had not required certifications since she had been at the company so long, but now this was a competitive disadvantage for her.

Workforce Solution

Through a special Rapid Response Grant, Denise was able to pursue the A + PC Technician and Microsoft Desktop Support training she needed. Denise found a program at Springfield Technical Community College that met her needs; this was 15-week program in A + PC Technician and Microsoft Desktop Support, after which she would hold professional IT certifications in these areas.

Outcomes & Benefits

Denise successfully completed the program and was hired as a Helpdesk Specialist at the health services company Commonwealth Care Alliance. "I want to thank you so much for helping me get through this whole process. Your effort to help me get into the re-training class at STCC really proved to be a benefit for me because I became more marketable and improved my technology skills," said Denise. "I do not think I would have gotten this job if I did not have the certifications. Thank you so much."
