Meet Preston

Workforce Challenge

After 18 years at the same job, Preston was laid off. He applied for the WIA program seeking assistance with training to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Preston was a driver with his previous job but couldn't afford the training for a CDL. His wife was disabled, and as the sole income earner for his family, he felt like driver training was his best chance of finding a well-paying job and getting back to work quickly.

Workforce Solution

Preston was approved for training funds and transportation assistance. He enrolled in the class and after obtaining his CDL, Preston was also approved for work-experience through a National Emergency Grant in Lafayette County. He was able to gain valuable experience as a driver and a road worker for Lafayette County Road Department. While working for the road department, Preston came back to the Workforce Center and earned his Career Readiness Certificate to make himself more employable.

Outcomes & Benefits

Preston's dedication paid off. After training and just two months of work-experience, he was hired as a production worker at Cooper Tire.
