Meet Nikki

Workforce Challenge

Nikki entered the WIA Youth program in June, 2006 as an In-School Youth and parenting teen. After a difficult second pregnancy, she dropped out of high school to get her GED. While trying to complete her education, Nikki had to miss a lot of school but she was determined to earn her diploma.

Workforce Solution

During her GED classes, Nikki participated in a Work Experience placement and was employed as a receptionist and intake clerk for the WIA office in El Dorado, Arkansas. She took the GED exam several times but was never successful in attaining her goal. Nikki was encouraged to work with her instructors to determine why she did so well on the pretest and not on the actual exam. Nikki realized that she was having test anxiety, but was determined to pass this test to meet her goals.

Outcomes & Benefits

Nikki passed her exam in November 2009 and on May 2010 she walked across the stage at the El Dorado Municipal Auditorium to graduate with others in her GED class. She did obtain employment at the Dollar Tree and was set to enroll at South Arkansas Community College for the fall of 2010. The WIA program gave her the drive and the motivation to continue moving forward and not to give up on her goals.
