Meet Amber

Workforce Challenge

Amber was 26 years old, unemployed, and married with three children. Amber had not worked since the birth of her first child four years earlier, and her job skills and past experience limited her to minimum wage employment. Amber was attending Arkansas Tech University to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with a goal of becoming a teacher. She was within two years of completing her education, and had received a Pell Grant but that amount did not cover all of her expenses.

Workforce Solution

Through Arkansas Workforce Center, Amber was enrolled in the WIA Adult program. She received assistance with her books, tuition and fees in addition to child care. Amber took a heavier than normal class load and enrolled in summer classes so that she could finish a full semester ahead of schedule.

Outcomes & Benefits

As soon as Amber completed her training, she started searching for employment. Less than one month after graduation, Amber had secured full time employment earning $11.50 per hour plus benefits. “WIA is a great program and it helped me more than you know, especially after my husband had gotten hurt and was no longer able to work," said Amber. "Thank you for helping me achieve my goals."
