Meet Christian

Workforce Challenge

On June 25, 2009, Christian enrolled as a participant in the WIA Youth Program. At the time, he was unemployed and a recent high school dropout. Additionally, the scores from a recent TABE (standard skills) assessment indicated that he was basic skills deficient. Christian came to the program seeking assistance in job searching and completing his education. Although he had some challenges, the youth program is designed turn barriers into goals that he would then receive support to achieve.

Workforce Solution

Through the assistance of WIA and its partner agencies, Christian successfully obtained his GED in December, 2009. By that time, he had also raised his basic skills above the ninth grade level. Christian was then referred to the University of South Carolina TRIO Program, a Midlands OneStop partner, for assistance in applying for financial aid. With their help, Christian enrolled as a full-time student at Midlands Technical College in August, 2010.

Outcomes & Benefits

Christian is now approaching the end of his second semester at MTC. He hopes to enlist in the Air Force and leave for basic training sometime during the summer of 2011. Christian is a prime example of how youth participants have benefited from the WIA Program. He has been given an opportunity to improve upon his education, which in turn has opened up new career opportunities that were not available in the past. Good luck, Christian!
