Meet James

Workforce Challenge

When James came to the Midlands Workforce Center he was unemployed, and was becoming more and more frustrated that his attempts to find a job were unsuccessful. James had little work history, and as a result, was lacking in terms of marketable skills and experience. He also had no reliable means of transportation. He was beginning to lose hope and wondering what to do next.

Workforce Solution

When James first sat down with his Workforce Consultant, she talked to him about his situation, his skills, and his goals. James explained to her that he had dabbled in carpentry as a hobby over the years and that he would be very interested in trying to turn these skills into a career. His counselor saw that his current skills were insufficient for the job market and she knew that to be employable as a carpenter a job seeker must be certified, so she began to explore training options. James was enrolled into a certified carpentry course in July, 2010, and successfully completed his training in October, 2010. He received his NCCER (National Center for Construction Education & Research) certification - an industry-recognized credential. His counselor only had to help him with a few referrals before the efforts paid off.

Outcomes & Benefits

James began work at Performance Fibers of Winnsboro as a Production Helper in early 2011 making $12 per hour. While the starting position wasn't immediately in tune to his newly learned trade, his supervisor stated that it was an important factor in choosing him for the job. Performance Fibers went on to tell Tonya that they were already in the process of creating a position in their Maintenance Department for James, who continues to enjoy his new career.
