Workforce Challenge

Alex and his wife came to the U. S. from the Philippines to provide a better life for their three children. When he lost his electronics packaging position, Alex knew that he needed to restart his professional life in order to be able to support his family; however, with his limited training and education, he was unsure about how to go about it. He didn’t have the technical skill to gain long-term, stable employment in the electronics industry and had applied for various positions with no success.

Workforce Solution

Alex came to NOVA and met with a training advisor. After exploring the training options available to him using ARRA funding, Alex decided that he would pursue a medical career and enrolled in the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Sunnyvale-Cupertino Adult Education.

Although many years had passed since Alex last sat in a classroom, he was more nervous about his language fluency than learning the material. Alex studied and excelled at the curriculum. He enjoyed the classroom setting and mentored other students during clinical skills practice.

Outcomes & Benefits

Alex secured a job at Mt. Pleasant View nursing facility as a full-time caregiver. The residents bask in his pleasant demeanor and the staff reports that he "handles even the most challenging residents with grace and utmost care." Overall, Alex is thrilled to have found a career that allows him to nurture others. Now set on a path, he looks forward to continuing his medical education, as either a dialysis technician or licensed vocational nurse.
