Meet Barbara

Workforce Challenge

Barbara was laid off from her temporary job in October, 2009. As part of receiving unemployment benefits, she registered with the SELACO WIB office in her area. At the appointment with SELACO WIB, she took an assessment test, filled out all the necessary paperwork, and was referred to a career development specialist.

Workforce Solution

Barbara's career counselor provided job leads that were specific to the jobs she'd held previously, and helped her with transportation costs to attend job fairs that would help her network and provide exposure to a number of different companies.

Barbara also attended a 3-day workshop called STEPS (Steps to Economic & Personal Success) that teaches skills to encourage self-sufficiency in life and work. "I learned how to increase my self-confidence and develop job career readiness skills," said Barbara. She also participated in other workshops on job searching, interviewing, and dressing for an interview. "SELACO WIB also has computers, computer classes, fax machines, and telephones for unemployed people who do not have access to these resources on their own,” Barbara shared.

Outcomes & Benefits

Barbara's persistence paid off, and she found employment through a staffing agency, where she worked while she continued to use SELACO WIB’s resources to search for regular employment. "One day, last November I visited the office and saw a part-time job posting for a Client Service Professional for H&R Block," said Barbara. "I applied for the position, got the job and I am still working there today.” Although it took some time, Barbara is back in the workforce and enjoying her job.
