Meet Mark

Workforce Challenge

Mark is a veteran who recently moved from Union, SC to Lexington, SC. He was working in a warehouse in Jonesville, SC, and had to travel from Lexington every morning for work - a distance of approximately 80 miles and 1.75 hours each way. Despite many attempts to find employment in the Midlands, Mark could not find a job close to his home that paid enough for him to provide for his family. He wanted to find a new career that would allow him to work closer to Lexington.

Workforce Solution

At the Columbia, SC One Stop, Mark was approved for enrollment into the WIA program, through which he obtained funding for training as a welder at Arc Labs, LLC. Mark excelled in his welding boot camp and earned certifications in Shield Metal Arc Welding, Oxyfuel Cutting, and Blueprint Reading.

In December 2010, Mark graduated from his welding program. After graduation, he was approached by a representative from D&T Steel. They were interested in Mark's welding skills, and his military background and solid employment history helped him land an interview.

Outcomes & Benefits

Shortly after his interview, Mark was hired by D&T Steel Fabricators as a welder. With the help of the WIA Program, Mark is currently self-sufficient and on his way to achieving a successful career. He's in his "dream job" and his commute is now around 20 minutes each way. Congratulations, Mark!
