Meet Nykia

Workforce Challenge

Nykia was working two part-time jobs when she found out about the Workforce Investment Act program through Upstate Career Source. She was very interested in continuing her education and pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at USC Upstate. Nykia sought assistance through Upstate Career Source to offset some of the education expenses not covered by her grants and scholarships.

Workforce Solution

Nykia's Workforce Specialist, Joni Sanders, assisted Nykia in obtaining the supplies and materials necessary for her to begin pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing in August, 2008. Ms. Sanders regularly contacted Nykia and spoke with her about her grades. Nykia excelled academically and because of her GPA, was awarded additional grants and scholarships that paid for all of her tuition, fees, and supplies from Fall 2009 onward. Ms. Sanders supported Nykia's journey by continuing to applaud her stellar academic success and helping her plan for her future.

Outcomes & Benefits

Nykia received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from USC Upstate in July, 2010, and began preparing for the state board exam. Nykia passed her nursing board exam in October, 2010, and began working as an RN with Spartanburg Regional Hospital System in January, 2011. When Nykia returned to see her workforce specialist and show off her diploma and license she received many congratulations from the staff. A very thankful Nykia said, "It was a long and tough road and I am grateful to have had you with me!"
