Workforce Challenge

Dennis was released from prison after serving time for 15 years. He was ready to find a job and create a new life. However, Dennis found it frustrating, confusing, and difficult to start life again in an unfamiliar world, and he was unsure of what career options would even be open to him.

Workforce Solution

Dennis' parole agent referred him to NOVA and its partnership program with the California Department of Corrections called New Start. New Start helps former inmates make the challenging adjustment to life outside of prison by assisting with employability and identifying employment options.

At NOVA's CONNECT! Job Seeker Center, Dennis met his advisor and they discussed his need to learn a new skill for employment. Prior to coming to NOVA, Dennis “didn't think there was much to be done about his situation.” To his surprise, he says that positive things “started happening right away.” Dennis and his advisor researched a career path in truck driving and worked on finding additional resources to cover the costs of applying for a new driver's license and transportation to classes.

Outcomes & Benefits

With NOVA's help, Dennis was able to get a new driver's license and attend and complete training to become a truck driver.

Today, he has been employed as a truck driver for several months and has additionally passed testing to receive his Class A driver's license which he hopes to use to further his driving career.

Dennis is grateful for the help he has received through the program, and of the CONNECT! staff he says, “They went out of their way. I appreciate that.”
