Workforce Challenge

Debbie, a former tobacco store manager, came to the Surry County JobLink in September 2009. She had been out of work for more than a year and had decided she needed to learn new occupational skills to improve her prospects for steady employment. She visited the Surry County JobLink office for assistance.

Workforce Solution

At JobLink, Debbie's WIA career facilitator recommended obtaining a career readiness certification and selecting a JobsNow pathway to enhance Debbie's skills in a short amount of time. JobsNOW is an ARRA-funded program that identified 12 careers where workers could receive training in less than six months and reenter the workforce quickly. Debbie decided to pursue a JobsNOW track at Surry Community College and study Medical Office Assisting. Training costs were paid by WIA.

During her training, Debbie formed a support system with others taking JobsNow courses at Surry Community College. She also began volunteering at Mount Airy Family Practice using the new skills she was learning.

Outcomes & Benefits

Debbie achieved her goal of a JobsNow Certificate and Career Readiness Certification. In August, 2010, she began part-time employment with Mount Airy Family Practice and was so happy to have a job again, especially one she found so rewarding. The following January, she went full-time with the medical practice. She notes, “It feels so good to get up in the morning and have a job to go to. I would not be where I am today without the support of WIA.”
