Workforce Challenge

ViewPlus Technologies, Inc. in Corvallis, Oregon is the leading innovator in designing, manufacturing, and marketing innovative technologies for people with print and sensory disabilities. Nearly all of ViewPlus' high-tech products - premium Braille and color ink embossers, touch and audio learning tools, and math access products - are sold outside Oregon. ViewPlus recently developed the IVEO® Touchpad technology for those with developmental and learning disabilities. In 2008-9, ViewPlus turned to the Linn-Benton-Lincoln Workforce Investment Board (LBLWIB). The company needed to transition to a new markets, and needed employees to gain the skills necessary to assist the company's transition.

Workforce Solution

The LBLWIB matched resources with ViewPlus so that it could access expertise from the Oregon State University College of Business Professors for targeted training.

Outcomes & Benefits

The resulting training helped the company increase revenue by transitioning from a distributor model to a direct sales model to increase exports. Since the conclusion of the project, ViewPlus staff in Oregon has increased by 19%, exports outside of Oregon constituted over 98% of sales revenues, and net sales revenues increased over the last fiscal year by 37% (over $700,000). "One result of this training has been the development of a comprehensive product development responsibility matrix and timeline," Carolyn Gardner, CFO at ViewPlus. "The creation of these tools and the skills our young managers have acquired will yield dividends in future projects. ViewPlus is known world-wide as an innovative company, and bringing new products to the market is important to our future success." In 2009, as ViewPlus needed help to continue to grow, it again partnered with the LBLWIB to provide additional employee training, including Project Management Group training for inexperienced managers chosen to become project leaders. As the result of the training, ViewPlus promoted seven employees and hired three more.
